Website Analysis and Design

This is where the discussion of business vision, scope, and user stories will converge into an outline of the website redesign.

General Notes

Targeted users

I have identified five typologies of users which should be targeted by the scribus website:

  • End users coming from the world of free software
  • Alternative graphic artists
  • Companies and public agencies looking for a cheaper solution
  • Potential and current contributors
  • Potential developers

gregp 10 Dec 2010 – This may need some fleshing out. I can imagine that there are those who are reading about Scribus somewhere and out of curiosity click a link to us – not exactly users just yet or ever, "just to see what it's about." There may be someone who writes about software, or graphic arts, and is trying to see if Scribus is something worth writing about. So you need to satisfy in some way these casual, half-accidental, inquisitive types. They should at least be able to quickly poke around a bit and see what there is to see.

Navigation paths

malex 10 Dec 2010 - As the use of Drupal has been scrapped in favor of static/wiki front site let's determine the path as if were in a wiki.

  • multilingual (en, de, fr, nl, es, it, pt, ...); how to manage the workflow?
  • en.scribus.net (a.k.a "www" and equal to www) - the home page. xx.s.n are translated sites in supported languages.
  • www/wiki - user wiki entry point.

How do we want to handle the landing pages? We need a list here:

  • /support
  • /community
  • /download

...

  • /end

Users coming from the world of free software

Who are they and what do they want?

  • New users who already have Scribus installed in they computer through the package manager and want to know what they can do
  • Potential users who want to know if Scribus fits their needs before installing
  • There are also those who may have heard about Scribus, may be quite unaccustomed to downloading software, but first want to get a sense of what Scribus is or is for. These people might be encouraged to view some examples of various sorts of Scribus-created projects.

What does Scribus want to show them

  • Overviews. Perhaps using a graphical approach to illustrate some overall concept (we are often dealing with those who are highly graphics-oriented).

Alternative graphic artists

Who are they and what do they want?

  • Graphic artists who already use other libre graphics software
  • Graphic artists who are exploring the free software world for "ethical" reasons
