My background in DTP started with Ventura Publishers for DOS in 2000. Yeah, it was great software, even for today I'd say (and it still used in that publishing house for special cases)! But DOS wasn't suitable for other tasks, so we have to move with mainstream... I dealt a bit with Adobe products, wasn't satisfied and completely migrate to Quark Xpress.
[[File:P7012989cMichaelMurtaugh-small.jpg|thumb|200px]]

At some moment (late 2009) I started to think about using some of *nix OS. But since one of my basic and most important task is DTP, my decision completely depended of one question: is there any usable DTP software for *nix systems?
Design of the graduation flyer and catalogue of MA Networked Media of the [http://pzwart.wdka.nl Piet Zwart Institute], Rotterdam.
After a little googling I found Scribus, and my doubts had gone.

In April 2010 I released first publication made with Scribus and continue using it till now. Our newspaper released weekly or once in two weeks, it has 4 pages, black and white offset printing. I send PDFs produced by Scribus to printshop and only once they had some troubles with output of one page.
File:recto1.png|Flyer first half-recto [A6]
Besides this publication I use Scribus for other tasks: [http://fir.nes.ru/ru/people/students/Pages/NESPaper.aspx newspaper] and some teaching stuff for New Economical School of Russiasome booklets.
File:recto2.png|Flyer second half-recto [A6]

I try to stay at front edge and use SVN version. It shows itself stable enough to be used in real production, not only for testing.

There is still lack of some basic DTP features and a excessive vector graphic tools in 1.4svn. Performance and usability are also things to improve. But for several pages publication Scribus is great anyway!

My brother recently published a climbing guidebook for a world famousbouldering area in South Africa. Rocklands Bouldering is 288 pages, full colour, set in landscape format(A5), and features colour pictures and drawings throughout. I'm also busy on something similar - big up to the Scribus developers, you guys are doing an amazing job!
We used public domain patent drawings to illustrate each project with a shift of humour.

Here are two links (the second one includes pictures):
There are no software that can handle spot colors for pictures. So we used a [http://stdin.fr/Bazar/SpotColorImages python script] written by Simeon Voelkel which we got on the Scribus IRC channel to convert images to eps files and add the desired spot color in the header of the image. The original script was written for duotone colors, since we needed only monochrome colors, we fed the script with a blank image of the same size of the original image. Then, search & replace directly in the XML to change the spot colors. Result, the images are "baked", meaning we cannot change them anymore, if changes are to be made, you'd have to go from the previous tif or jpg version and re-apply the script.

I live in Madison, Wisconsin, which has a relatively high concentration of worker co-ops. Our network (or business association) is called Madison Worker Cooperatives, which is usually shortened to MadWorC. The website is [http://madworc.org madword.orc].
[[File:IGNU-les_jetes_de_l_encre-bologne.jpg|800px]]

I've been using Scribus in a somewhat unusual way: I make newsletters that are printed as posters. I design them specifically so co-ops can hang it up in their workspaces, so people can read the poster on the wall when they're on break. The posters are 13x19 inches.
For us, no question to make a CD without Open Source tools. The CD was recorded with Ardour on a Linux station. We used Scribus for the CD cover and booklet. Photographer Francois Michel and all the musicians Guerran Sellin, Alexandre Taveau, Survière Florès and Sieglfried Courteaux have played in Open Source. It is a great pleasure to have used Scribus, because it is very user friendy and we have achieved a nice product for a small budget. The colors in CYMK are nicely printed.

The workflow is pretty simple: people in the organization write the articles, and I lay them out in Scribus (with a little help from OpenOffice.org, Inkscape, and the GIMP). We've settled into a pattern of one co-op feature per edition, with one or two other articles as well. The newsposters are published every other month, by one of the local worker co-ops.
Each CD-burner company has its own format for templates and we made the cover and the booklet with a Open Source template found on the gallery. It was very simple to adapt it for the best price company.

They give you ideas for nice bike rides in the region of Bern and come as pdf files in A3 format. They are still readable if printed on A4; alternative files split into two A4 pages each are also available. I am the editor of the quarterly newsletter for Clan Mackintosh of North America with over 500 members in the United States, Canada and Scotland.

I have used several desk top publishers over the years and had been using Pagemaker for the past few years. [http://www.choicesmagazine.co.uk Choices Magazine] is a new UK glossy subscription only magazine for the employeepreneur, marketed via Direct Sales. Our main target market is employees making the transition to self employed, to business owner; with our secondary market being very early start-ups. Our focus is on the next generation of industry leaders and entrepreneurs to nurture and build into successful brands. The big dreamers and forward thinkers; in particular, today’s self starter and tomorrow’s entrepreneur; the next gigantic global brand. And for the serious entrepreneur; Choices Magazine provides a stream of income and a huge platform to develop and launch brands. Our features, stories and articles (including success principles, practical projects, problem solving techniques and business strategies) give our readers the knowledge, skills and know how, to win. We provide information to give them the edge, focus and necessary qualities to deliver their best, and to be a leader in their field. Choices incorporates information in four crucial areas necessary for a successful and balanced life: Business Choices, Lifestyle Choices, Wellbeing Choices, and Personal Growth Choices.

I used Scribus 1.3.9 to do the first pre launch issue (32 pages), which is available now, and have started working on the launch issue (64 pages), out at the end of March 2011. There was a slight learning curve, getting used to Scribus, but overall I think it's an excellent program. The proof we received from the printers was of excellent quality, putting my fears to rest that the pdf output would not be compatible for some reason (although Scribus do make clear that the commercial printing quality is superb!).

Previously the magazine had been made with Corel Ventura 8, but due to some hyphenation problems we decided to leave it and the last issue (winter 2010) was made with Scribus 1.5 (built from SVN) without any major problems. It contains 155 pages full of text and photos. Due to low funds there is currently no printed, but only the free download version, but in the near future we plan to go back to the paper issue.

The '''[http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bookshelf_Project Wikipedia Bookshelf Project]''' is creating a core set of public outreach materials designed to help new contributors understand the specific culture of Wikipedia, the free, online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The materials aim to increase new contributor awareness and interest, foster excitement about contributing to Wikipedia, and provide key training tools. The materials are being developed in English; however, they are to be designed for easy translation, localization, and customization by volunteers, local chapters, and educational institutions such as schools and universities. Bookshelf materials are being developed by the project team from the Wikimedia Foundation (the Foundation that oversees the development of Wikipedia), community volunteers, and production experts.

Half of each issue are full color pages, the leftover is black-white (mainly 16 pages issues, sometimes 24 pages). Started with Scribus 1.5 SVN, but now it is made with Scribus 1.3.8 due to performance in text editing. Advertisements have been made with CorelDRAW (as JPG files), text files arrive in Word format and are converted with Open Office including some cleanup. The sudoku game is made with Inkscape as an EPS file. The big advantage of migrating to Scribus is the Short Words plugin — Ventura has not such a feature at all.

The proof we received from the printers was of excellent quality, putting my fears to rest that the pdf output would not be compatible for some reason (although Scribus do make clear that the commercial printing quality is superb!).

Wikipedia Bookshelf Project

Reporter: Frédéric Schütz

Date: January 2011

The Wikipedia Bookshelf Project is creating a core set of public outreach materials designed to help new contributors understand the specific culture of Wikipedia, the free, online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

The combination of these requirements naturally led the project team to choose Scribus to create these materials. Scribus fits perfectly with the goals of the Wikimedia Foundation, and allows anyone to easily access the tools needed to contribute to the project. The resulting materials are also published under a free license (Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, except for the Wikipedia and Wikimedia logos).

The material produced so far can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bookshelf (note that the last two documents in the list of printed material were not created with Scribus; in particular, the project is currently looking for a volunteer who could convert the document Video for Wikipedia and the Open Web: A Guide to Best Practices for Cultural and Educational Institutions, originally created using Adobe InDesign, in Scribus format).

Some of the Scribus files are already available at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Localization_guidelines_(Bookshelf), in particular for the Welcome to Wikipedia booklet (PDF, ZIP files with Scribus source).

A 60 plus page effort to show the world that British lure fishing can be more than just bass orientated. This document received over 5000 unique reads in the first 14 days of its release.
