Scripting Scribus. An introduction to the Scripter
Have you ever said, "This program is pretty nice, but I wish it would ..."? Python scripting in Scribus can drastically improve your work flow, and it's relatively easy for beginners to not only use scripts, but also write them (Linux.com).

Possible GSoC 2009 projects
*Implement complete ODT/SXW and ODG (= ODG/SXD multi-page) import and export (ie. enable the import of ODT files as files, not just as formatted text).

*Rewrite the table code and (perhaps) write an OpenDocument and OO.org spreadsheet importer (select the table, select the range, option to ignore character and table formatting, option to import diagrams, option to import as a table, as csv or as a vector graphic, options for page break, including creation of new pages, style import, linked spreadsheet files, copy'n'paste).

*Rewrite Search & Replace (search the whole document or even all opened documents, enable regular expressions).

*Enable the use of MultipleMaster fonts based on mmafm and mmpfb from the lcdf type tools, and implement a UI for their use in Scribus.

*Write a plug-in for using Scribus as a tool for designing packaging material (use DXF or EPS export from a CAD app and help the designer to create a 2-D printing template; ideally, also create an OpenGL-based 3-D preview for the final package).

*Enhance the Text Filter, so that it can import/export InDesign Exchange Files, InDesign Snippets, QuarkXTags and QuarkXML, plain XML etc. Also, create a new UI for the Text Filter to make it more consistent with other Scribus dialogs and more flexible.

*Enhance the Colour Wheel to something similar like Illy's Live Colors (read the Illustrator CS 3 manual from Adobe for a reference).

*Write a web-based editing system for Scribus (Scribus Server): Scribus files should be viewable and (at least partially, ie. text frames) editable in a browser. An admin should be able to set editing policies. Requires enhancements to the file format.

*Implement anchored objects in text frames and enhance Inline Objects.

*Easy page/end footnotes.

*Enable use of CID fonts (and CJK typographical rules).

*Rewrite Hyphenation code and the related UI.

*Enhance EPS and SVG export and create real export dialogs (like the one for PDF files). Ask Franz first!

*More runaround options for text (read clipping paths in EPS and AI files, detect and use transparency ...).

*Macro recorder (ask Henning first).

*Rewrite of the Eyedropper and the Magic Wand.

*Spot colour improvements (spot colour tints, mixing spot colours (inks), loading and creating ink groups (cf. ID), read spot colours in TIFF and PSD files).

*Rewrite the bookmarks code.

*Layer enhancements (enable/disable guides for single layers, option to remove unused layers, merge selected layers, cloning of layers, new layer indicators: use different colours for frame borders, handles etc.).

*Enhance the image export and let it create colour managed and really printable files, including spot colours in TIFF files.

*Implement PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-4 and XPS export (Jean Ghali is ready to mentor this project!).
Prokoudinehttps://wiki.scribus.net/wiki/index.php?title=GSoC_2009_Student_Proposals&diff=20175GSoC 2009 Student Proposals2009-01-26T12:12:32Z
Prokoudine: let's make gsoc2009 reality for Scribus :)

План A:

Scribus.

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

* к текущей странице;
* к чётным страницам;
* к нечётным страницам;
* ко всем страницам;
* к диапазону страниц.

valign="top" |

valign="top" |

Введите текст "Make Khajuraho More Sexy" в две строки.

В палитре "Свойства" установите шрифт Georgia Roman, 87 пунктов, ........... with leading at 104 points.

[Page 3 Freedom Yug]]

???

Page 4 Freedom Yug

???

Lots of things to learn already by re-creating the two pages :) I will now continue with the inside of the cover pages and then create another 4 pages of content. In the end, our Rembrandt mini magazine will have 8 pages/4 resp. 2 sheet. After following all or most of the steps to be described, an average talented user should be able to make prolific use of Scribus.
** Since Scribus is not the best tool (in its actual state not even a good tool) to create a tutorial, i don't think it's a good idea to base a tutorial on writing a tutorial. Andreas' idea about a leaflet or a flyer (marketing) is imho better (a.l.e).
215. This will line up on the outside with one of our vertical guides and on the inside margin guide.

If you see too many gridlines on your blank page, unselect View > Show Grid. You will see blue-colored lines marking the outer margins of your page. The concept of Scribus is quite simple: To place a photo on the page, first you must create an image frame and then import the photo into this frame. Similarly, to place text on the page, you must create a text frame first, and then insert, or type, text into this frame. You'll soon discover that this approach has some great advantages.

A toolbar contains all the Tools that Scribus offers. You can use this link to get your bearings, but remember that gliding your mouse over each icon will display a tool tip with the name of each tool. Click on the third one (Insert Image Frame )[keyboard: I]. This allows you to insert an image frame in the page. That's what you want for placing the cover picture. Drag your mouse from the top-left of the Scribus page, to the bottom-right, or any corner to its opposite. Don't worry if you don't get it exactly right. You'll find an image frame drawn on your page, in the shape of a large rectangle, with black-colored diagonal lines forming a large 'X' through it . This is a traditional printing industry custom, to distinguish image frames from text frames. That 'X' won't ever print, so don't worry.

Scribus
From the menus, go to Tools > Properties (in 1.3.x Windows > Properties). Along comes a dialog box that is the heart and soul of Scribus. All objects you add to the page, from image frames, text frames, or even actual photos, text, or lines, are all controlled from this central dialog box. Make sure the image frame you just created is highlighted, or selected. Usually red-colored or other colored square dots will mark all the four corners as a visual cue. If not, in the Toolbar, click on the first icon (Select Item), and just click on the image frame. The Properties Tool will instantly show all its details. An object must be selected to be modified or deleted.
Give a human-readable label to this image frame, such as 'CoverPhotoFrame' in the 'Name' field of Properties. In case you do not see the 'Name' field, just click once on the top tab, that says X,Y,Z. Next, precisely place the top-left of your picture frame on the top-left edge of your page. In the X-Pos and Y-Pos fields, type in the values of 0mm, each. Pos is obviously a short-form of Position. Type in the Width and Height at 210 mm and 280 mm respectively. Your frame is precisely placed on the page. While you can resize and reposition with the mouse, typing in values is much faster for a task like this.

After you make sure your image frame is selected, then right-click anywhere inside this image frame. You will see a Context Menu pop-up right under the mouse cursor. Select Get Picture... from this menu (in 1.3.x this is Get Image). A file dialog box opens up for you to navigate into your FYug folder, and then into the images folder, so you can select the 'TitleFX.jpg' sample image. Click on the OK button. The image frame on your Scribus page is immediately filled with the TitleFX.jpg image.

Note the sculpture in the image is too much to the right. We must drag the picture inside the image frame to the left, so that the sculpture is positioned in the centre of the image frame. Extra parts of the picture will get automatically cropped out of view beyond the boundaries of the image frame. First, let's play with this positioning with the mouse. On the toolbar, click on the icon for Edit Contents of Frame . Now when you left click inside the image frame you can manually slide your picture around, and for some projects this may be accurate enough. For our project let's be very precise. First, make sure the image frame is selected (click Select Item on the toolbar then click your frame again, or try this: left-click outside your frame and you will see the Select Item icon become highlighted, then left-click inside the frame to select it). Now go back to the Properties Tool and click on the tab titled 'Image'. In the field marked X-Pos, just type in the value “-90mm” to move the image 90 mm to the left. Note how the image is shifted inside the image frame.

At the bottom of the Properties Tool (Image tab), you may have noticed a section called 'Input Profiles.' This will only show if the LittleCMS on your PC is correctly installed and configured. The color of your images may look markedly different on your screen, and even more when you print them. This little area minimizes such color mismatch. From the pop-up for 'Input Profile', choose a color profile that closely matches your monitor. Scribus immediately re-renders the image on the screen to display colors according to that profile.

The actual installation of LittleCMS and how to use it under Scribus is actually quite simple, but beyond the scope of this tutorial. Here are some good tips:
#Download a set of free profiles from the Adobe site, so you can send images between Mac, Windows, and Linux.
#Create a custom color profile of your own monitor and use that instead of any other.

You may want to save your file before proceeding. So head over to File>Save and type the name 'Fyug.sla' for your file. Save it in the FYug folder. You can also just click on the floppy icon in the taskbar, right underneath the menus, to save your file.

The cover page of any magazine has its name emblazoned across the top. This is called the Masthead. Ours is titled “FreedomYug.” We'll start by creating a semi-transparent band for the Masthead. Go to Settings > Preferences > Display (in 1.3.x File > Preferences > PDF Export). Make sure this checked: “Use PDF1.4 Transparency Features” (In 1.3.x make sure the PDF 1.4 is chosen under Compatibility). Click OK. Your document now supports transparent objects.
Click the fifth tool in the Toolbar. Should you hover your mouse over this, the roll-over text would display “Draw Various Shapes” or something similar. Select the rectangle shape from the drop-down menu. Click anywhere near the top-centre of the page and draw a rectangle. Make sure the rectangle is selected, and immediately go to the Properties Tool, click on the X,Y,Z tab, and enter the following values: X-Pos: 30mm. Y-Pos: 0mm. Width: 150mm. Height: 33mm. Give it a name, such as 'MastheadBand' in the Name field.

Then click on the Colors tab in Properties. Click the Pencil tool to select the stroke or outline border. Click on 'None' in the colors list. Then, click the bucket icon to select the fill color. Click on 'Black' from the list of colors, and in the opacity field, enter 69% (if you do not see an Opacity field, you have not selected PDF 1.4 transparency features -- see first paragraph above in this section). You will see the band has turned semi-transparent, and partly shows the image through itself, in darkened colors. Experiment with Opacity and other colors to your taste.

Draw another rectangle towards the centre of the image. In the Properties Tool (X,Y,Z), give X-Pos: 93mm. Y-Pos: 160mm. Width: 115.35mm. Height: 13.75mm. Again in Colors, set the stroke to 'None', and the fill with 'Black' at an opacity of 69%. Call this the 'HeadlineBand'. A third rectangle, named 'SubHeadBand' can be drawn slightly underneath this, at X-Pos: 100mm. y-Pos: 180mm. Width: 109.7mm. Height: 18.35mm. The fourth and final rectangle, this time a little square box, will have the following Properties: X-Pos: 20.5mm. Y-Pos: 245mm. Width and Height will both be 9mm.
bgcolor="palegreen" | Here is a shortcut you might try for a repetitive job like this. Instead of making each rectangle from scratch, then changing all of these parameters, after you make the first one and adjust its colors, just copy it: Item > Duplicate. Then all you have to adjust is its name, position, and size.

valign="top" |Hold on! Don't fill this with the same 69% Black. Let's give it a fresh lime green color. Go to Edit > Colors... in the menu. A dialog box listing existing colors displays on your screen. Click on 'New' and give your new color swatch a name, 'Lime Green' (if you already have a LimeGreen, call it LimeGreen2 or something else). In the second dialog-box that opens up, choose 'CMYK' as the Color Model. This closely follows the inks of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, used in your desktop printer and in printing plants, that mix inks to create new colors. With the sliders at the bottom, give C:69%, M: 10%, Y:100%, and K: 0%.

Click OK in this dialog box, and then click OK again in the Colors dialog box, where you'll notice your new color added. Go back to your page, click on the small square you just created, and in the Colors tab of Properties Tool, give it a stroke of None, and a fill of LimeGreen, at 100% opacity. You cover should look like the screenshot here, with all the bands for text.

One last thing. Select each semi-transparant band individually, and in the Properties palette, in the X,Y,Z tab, click on the icon of the padlock at the bottom. This ensures you accidentally do not move or resize each locked object.

Similarly, lock the CoverPicture Frame as well, and the green square, using this padlock. Also, uncheck 'Text Flows Around Frame' in the Shape tab of the Properties Tool for each of these rectangles. This allows text to overlap the rectangles.
Most needed use cases:

* booklet printing:
Arrange original pages on print sheets which are at least twice as large as the original page; make sure the backside pages end up at the correct position and orientation.
Take care of bleed areas and crop marks.

* business cards:
Replicate original page in a fixed grid on the print sheet; take care that the backside matches.

* n-folds:
Scribus already allows reader spreads for a limited choice of n-folds. Provide a simple imposition for these on a print sheet.

* Möbius band printing:
Arrange a sequence of pages in strips which can be glued together to form a Möbius band (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6bius_strip)

Abstract
While Scribus is being developed rapidly and getting closer to proprietary solutions, it still lacks one feature that is extremely useful for people who want to print professional documents: imposition. So, as a Google Summer of Code 2007 project, I would like to prepare an imposition plug-in for Scribus. It has been an urgent enhancement for a longer time and is reported on project’s bugtracker[1].

The goal of this project is to provide an easy-to-use solution for printing multiple pages on both sides of the sheet of paper. It is intended to be a wizard, which will allow user to decide the size of the paper, and as a result it will create new Scribus file, with ready-to-print pages.

After some discussion with Scribus developers, I decided that the options implemented in the plug-in will include:
» booklet printing
Allow printing previously arranged pages on a larger sheet of paper, so that after cutting the pages will make a booklet.
» printing business cards
Allow printing an original page multiple times on a fixed grid on the print sheet, taking into consideration both sides of the sheet.
» printing n-folds
Scribus already supports 3-folds and 4-folds. However, printing them may be quite tricky, because of folding lines.

The target user of the plug-in is a user, who:
» wants to print on a home printer
It often happens, that user needs to print a single copy of a large document. In that case, Scribus will automagically design printing for the user effectively. Other cases are brochures on 3-folds, or double-sided bussiness cards. I intend to prepare a plug-in which will fully support this application.
» has to prepare a job to be sent to a professional printer
In most cases, the imposition is handled by specialists in the printing house. However, when it comes to simple documents which are to be printed in many copies, a popular way to limit expenses is self-prepared imposition.

As imposition is a complicated and difficult process, I am aware that the plug-in is is not meant to replace the high end tools used by professional printers.
base distro
<s>I think Kubuntu is a good choice for a base distro, because:
* Being a debian based distro, so we can benefit from all debian technologies (like apt) and community support as well.
* It is one of the most widely used distros these days, it has a very wide user base and well established community support.
* Virtually any piece of software available for debian is available for ubuntu at the same time, which mean we've an extensive set of available applications.</s>

About Your Organization
Describe your organization.
Scribus brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOSX, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout.
Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2007? What do you hope to gain by participating?
The immense complexity of Desktop Publishing is exemplified by the current state of the commercial market where the vast majority of installations are dominated by only two programs that while having enormous developmental resources behind them still seem unable to address a number of things correctly. Due to the complexity of the DTP workflow, the development of Scribus requires primary allocation of our developmental efforts in the areas with the highest return for our users. This creates unfortunate conditions where some useful smaller projects are placed farther down the roadmap http://wiki.scribus.net/index.php/1.3.x_Roadmap. Participating in the GSoC 2007 will allow us to address these shortcomings while allowing participating students to gain valuable experience designing and coding the solutions that will have immediate practical applications for DTP professionals and amateurs alike. Our hope is that the incentive that GSoC provides for students may motivate some of them to become involved in Scribus development and that they will carry on this activity after the completion of GSoC 2007 thus expanding our team and making the only open source DTP program even better.
Andreas Vox <Andreas.Vox@googlemail.com>
Andreas Vox has a background in mathematics, oo programming and software architecture. While preferring Java, he's now primarily programming Scribus in C++. He has ported Scribus to OSX Aqua and has been providing binary snapshots of Scribus/Aqua for anyone wanting to try out Scribus on OSX. Currently, he is bringing Scribus's text system to the state of the art. Future plans include a LaTeX mode, better tables, better XML integration and more code refactoring.

Peter Linnell <mrdocs@gmail.com>
Peter Linnell has been a US based IT business and pre-press consultant since 1999. From early days of Scribus development, Peter has been testing Scribus in real world pre-press environments and helping to guide design and features for Scribus. With the formation of the team, he acts as the release manager, helps manage the infrastructure, tests output quality, and handles much of the external relations with other teams and groups.

Craig Bradney <cbradney@gmail.com>
Craig Bradney studied Computer Science in Sydney Australia, where he was born. After completing his studies he often programmed for fun, but worked in commercial IT environments such as support, development and technical management.When Craig moved to Linux permanently quite a few years ago, he needed a publishing solution and soon came across Scribus and quickly began to get into OSS coding with the Scribus team. Craig has brought many of the public facing tools to the project, such as hosting the bug tracker, wikis, and now all websites. Craig has been editor for the Renault Car Club of Australia for 11 years and for the past 3 he has used Scribus for its bi-monthly magazine. Craig does a variety of coding across the codebase, bug tracking, code cleaning and standardising, as well as management at some levels. Craig now lives in Luxembourg and works as deskside support and a data centre technician.

Riku Leino <tsoots@gmail.com>
Riku Leino started his involvement with Scribus development with version 1.1.5. He wrote the Document Template plug-in and the new OO/HTML/ importers for 1.2.2. He works in IT support.

Petr Vaněk <nekrokodyl@gmail.com>
Petr Vaněk started with Scribus 1.1.4. He is a plug-in specialist - has written several Scribus plug-ins and the how-to for Scribus plug-in writing.

Oleksandr Moskalenko <moskalenko@gmail.com>
Oleksandr (Alex) Moskalenko encountered Scribus when he was looking for Linux software to produce a poster for a scientific conference. Realizing that the scribus package in Debian was very buggy and its maintainer inactive Alex took over the maintainance of Scribus package in Debian, which eventually led to his becoming a Debian Developer and later a member of Scribus development team. Alex has been contributing bug reports, interface translation, and some development infrastructure improvements such as writing scripts for producing Scribus interface translation statistics, administration of an IRC bot for #scribus and related channels, performing user support, and maintaining an upstream repository for a number of scribus and related Debian and Ubuntu packages. Currently, Alex is moving from mainly python/shell to more C++/Qt4 programming to become more involved in Scribus development.
Jean Ghali <darth.scribius@gmail.com>
Jean Ghali studied image processing after two years learning mathematics and physics. He started coding in various languages such as Visual Basic, Java and C++ with emphasys on color management. Now he is employed by a printing and publishing company as a pre-press engineer. While performing a technology survey, he discovered Scribus. He performed a port of Scribus to Windows. His porting work also lead him to develop Scribus printing system on Windows. Since his work on the Windows port, Jean Ghali has mostly been involved in improving Scribus color management and svg import capabilities. Future plans include color management abstraction, improvement to Scribus graphics capabilities and XPS export.

What criteria did you use to select these individuals as mentors? Please be as specific as possible.
All of our mentors are members of the core Scribus development team. Beside the familiarity with Scribus code they posess other qualities that are useful for succesful development of this type of software:

* familiarity and experience with the prepress technologies
* Knowledge of the existing open source technologies applied to desktop publishing
* Experience in mentoring junior coders, possibly from an academic environment
* In depth knowledge of user requirements

We made sure that only those members of our development team who would be able to dedicate sufficient time and efforts to mentoring of GSoC students and had excellent communication abilities were selected for the mentoring team.

About The Program
What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?
We plan to perform regular reviews of the students' work via most likely weekly reports to mentors and continuous involvement of the students in the activity in our IRC channel and mailing list. Our main concern is that we must avoid having students that will produce promises and vague assurances of their involvement instead of the actual code. Frequent reviews and actively solicited involvement in our public developmental process should keep the communication between students and the rest of the team open and allow us to monitor the progress of the students. In an unfortunate case when a student will actually disappear we may elect to contact the second runner candidate to see if they would continue the project or we will fold the project into our main developmental plan and ask Google to withhold the final payment to the student who disappeared.

What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?
Scribus Development Team has proven to function in a very cooperative and supportive environment. Since all our mentors come from the core Scribus team we have sufficient confidence that none of them will suddenly disappear. If the involvement of a member will temporarily decline due to unforseen external circumstances we have sufficient overlap in skills and willingness for mutual support that would allow us to reallocate resources without causing any interruptions in the GSoC 2007 mentoring process. This will be helped by the open monitoring of the student's progress via our public mailing list and IRC channel. We also have a compentent backup mentor Jean Ghali who is ready to take over mentoring of a student in case some other member of mentoring group is unable to temporarily perform their duties.

What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your project's community before, during and after the program?
We plan to ensure that students selected for the GSoC program actively participate in the discussions on our mailing list and IRC. We conduct much of our development discussion on IRC and will ask students to be present there as much as possible. Over the years we have found that open and friendly atmosphere on our mailing list and IRC channel has helped a number of people make a transition from Scribus users to contributors to its development. We believe that by exposing students to this environment we can foster their sense of involvement and help them see how their accomplishments help the entire community as much as being rewarding learning experiences for themselves. The absence of flamewars given a large number of contributors to our communication channels and rapid pace of develpment shows that this strategy has been productive.

What will you do to ensure that your accepted students stick with the project after GSoC concludes?
We are hoping that the learning experience the students will go through while communicating with mentors and participating in our mailing list and IRC discussions with developers and users will create in them a sense of participation in the Scribus community. We do not believe that it is possible to force a volunteer to stick with the project they are not interested in, so our intent will be to make their participation in Scribus development over this summer both useful and interesting. As long as the students enjoy their participation and create a bond with the larger Scribus community there is a chance that they will continue their involvement after the GSoC concludes.
Prokoudinehttps://wiki.scribus.net/wiki/index.php?title=%D0%92%D1%91%D1%80%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%B9&diff=14669Вёрстка статей2007-03-12T10:37:52Z
Prokoudine: editing and uploading localized screenshots

Introduction
Creating a document with a consistent look can be made easy at least when it comes to the text formatting. The secrets for success are document templates, paragraph styles, text filters and article submitters who don't mind some extra work for public good.

How it works
For your articles create some paragraph styles with describing names. I've here created three which I'm going to use with my articles at least in the next three issues of Tsoots' digest.

After creating all desired paragraph styles I'll save the document as a template so these styles will be there when ever I get more articles from busy writers. File->Save as Template...
It's now guaranteed that my work will have a consistent look between issues cause this is the only template I'm gonna use when making them.

For the first issue I don't have a text filter created so that's the next thing to do. Create a text frame and from context menu choose Get Text... You'll get a dialog that will look like this. Notice the red dot. That's the drop down box from where I pick "Text Filters" before hitting ok.

Text filters are simple text filters that tell Scribus how to format the text being imported. It's also possible to apply paragraph styles to paragraphs based on different rules. What I've been thinkin is that writers should prepend every paragraph they make with \P1 and \P2 (P1 for the first paragraphs without indent) and headers with \H1. Once the text filter is created be sure to give it a name to the bottom left largish text field so it will be available whenever you get the next article for laying out.

And here's how the format for the text file looks like. Notice the red spots again. That's how I want my writers to prepend headers and paragraphs.

OK, that's about it. Here's what I do when i next time get an article from a writer.

* Launch scribus and goto New From Template from where I pick my article doc template which will include the paragraph styles needed

* Draw a text frame to the page

* use Get Text... from the context menu and from the file dialog that opens I'll choose Text Filters as my importer (of course I'll also select the file where the article is)

* Now after Text Filter dialog has opened up I'll choose my saved filter that I called "Article Style" and press ok and the text will be nicely formatted just like I wanted.

Final word
Scribus has a simple to use C++ api for building formatted text importers. Text Filter plugin has also been built using it. If you are interested in coding such a plugin please visit page Get Text How-to
Download A New Version
First: make sure that you know what you are doing. The basic process of installing Scribus on your computer may have both an easy and more complex solution, so choose the one that fits your experience, unless you're willing to be adventuresome. In general, for those unfamiliar with downloading, compiling, and installing software, it would be best to seek out an already compiled version for your system. These exist for various Linux distros, MacOSX, OS/2 & eComStation and Windows (in fact, as of this writing, for Windows automatic installing of the binaries are your only option, and please note that the Windows versions require Win2000 or XP).
bgcolor="palegreen" |Hints for the wary:
* Get help from a friend who knows how to install Scribus on your platform (platform meaning Linux vs MacOS vs Windows)
* Check the Scribus archives for installation help.
* If you get stuck, send an email to the Scribus list. Here's what they will want to know: your platform and distro, the version of Scribus you're trying to install or work with, and of course the problem along with what happened, messages you got along the way, and so on.
Visit www.scribus.net and head to the downloads section. Please read the instructions in the documentation section on how to install Scribus for your platform. There is some detailed information inside your downloaded package, in the INSTALL and README files.

We recommend using only stable versions for production work. If you are really brave and you want to help us with finding bugs and providing feedback on usability of new features that are a work in progress, go to this page to get the latest CVS version. The CVS version is not always stable, it is also significantly ahead of the stable version in its features and capabilities. Just follow the simple instructions in this wiki on installing from CVS. For those who don't know, CVS stands for Concurrent Versioning System, a clever way for several programmers from diverese geographical locations to store their software at a central repository as they dynamically work on it.

Make sure you read the requirements page on the site. This is because Scribus needs some rather important files installed on your system. And don't forget the hints mentioned above.

Get Adobe Reader
Scribus is a great tool for creating PDFs. Yet not all PDF viewers are created equal, especially under Linux. So, head to adobe.com and download and install the latest, native version of Adobe Reader for your platform. As of this writing the latest version is Adobe Reader 7.

Match Colors That Print
Finally, if you wish to design publications, you need to ensure colors you see on screen match colors that print. For this, you need to install a special and separate piece of software, called a Color Management System, or CMS. Windows and Macintosh come with a CMS built-in, called ICM and ColorSync, respectively. Under Linux, you need to install a free CMS, called LittleCMS. Download and follow the instructions at littlecms.com, or you may find that lcms (and lcms-devel) can be installed just as Scribus binaries are shown above. You can also install versions of this under Windows and Macintosh. For this tutorial, LittleCMS is not necessary, though quite helpful.

You Can Use Your Existing Fonts Collection
Do you have a collection of fonts that you wish to use under Linux? Install your existing TrueType, Postscript, or OpenType format fonts under Linux. You'll find the simple steps mentioned in the documentation section of the Scribus site. For our tutorial, we don't need to install any special fonts. So you can start right away with your first sample publication.

Sane Workflows
Our magazine is called 'FreedomYug' and it contains a lot of pictures and text. A magazine with a few hundred pages could also have several Scribus files, each with eight to 20 pages. So, it is best to create a folder for each publication. I've created one called 'Fyug'. Inside this, create at least two distinct folders, 'Text,' and 'Images'. You may use a plain text editor, such as Vim or Emacs in Linux, or Notepad in Windows. You may also use a word processor, such as Openoffice.org, author your articles and save them in the Text folder. Scribus can import Openoffice.org files with some limited ability to make use of text formatting. Later versions of Scribus (1.2.5, 1.3.3 or higher) can also import Microsoft Word files, but the text will lose all formatting during import.

Similarly, scan or enhance photographs and store them in the 'Images' folder. A wide range of image formats can be used, including TIFF, JPEG, and PNG.
Prokoudine: lost update :)

A magazine or a publication design is not about text and images on the page. It is about empty, white spaces on the page. The text and images merely punctuate this emptiness. These 'breathing' spaces are important, much like gardens, parks, and other open-air sites are important to any high-density metropolis. So launch Scribus, go to the File menu, and click on New. For the rest of the tutorial, I will use the following convention to describe menu choices: File > New.
The New command displays this dialog box.
* Click on the 'Default Unit' drop-down box, and choose 'Millimetres (mm)' rather than the default 'Points'.
* Click on the drop-down menu of 'Size' and choose 'Custom' for the page-size of our magazine. Enter the above dimensions for width and height. Note the level of precision beyond the decimal-point to the right, offered by Scribus.
* Click on 'Facing Pages' so you can view pages side-by-side, as in a realworld magazine. Enter the above values for margin guides, that marks off the actual printing area, inside the physical paper.
* Uncheck 'Left Page First' (as shown). Our first page will be the cover for our magazine.
* Click 'OK' to view your first blank page in Scribus.
For v 1.3.3, the requestor looks slightly different. Notice the different layout of the Margin Guides area, also that Facing Pages is now Page Layout > Double Sided and 'First Page is: Right Page' is selected differently:
Prokoudinehttps://wiki.scribus.net/wiki/index.php?title=File:FileNewFYug133-W542px_ru.png&diff=14322File:FileNewFYug133-W542px ru.png2007-02-05T08:56:44Z
Prokoudine:
