Digidiomedia Portfolio 2017 My personal portfolio 2017 booklet-art made with only opensource programs. It's was a project where I used Blender 3d for all the 3d objects, Gimp for details on all images. Inkscape for all vector based logo design and. And at the end Scribus v1.5.2 to create a full magic booklet art with 48 pages personal work. In the last stage of finalising this booklet there was no struggle at all in any way to print this art in full color.

* 1. 48 pages 135gr matsilk paper + Hardcover top
* 2. Printed with https://issuu.com/digidiomedia/docs/portfolio-digidio_7_21x21cm_final_r
* 3. 21 x 21 cm square booklet
* 4. Used applications: Scribus v1.5.2 - Blender 3d - GIMP v2.8.18 - Inkscape v0.91
* 5. Used 14 templates with 10 grids + 1 fonts style - Embedded internet links
* 6. High quality 300dpi + ICC ISO Coated v2 300% + image effect - Sharpen

Perfect job Scribus and all others. Cheers developers and the community. 2017 bring us new features in the upcoming v1.5.3 release.
Scribus version: 1.4.6

Maya and the Book of Everything is a young adult fantasy novel by Laurie Graves. The book is available from Amazon and other online sources as well as through bookstores using the Ingram worldwide distribution network. We know that Maya is being read in the USA, Canada and at least 4 other countries. The second book in the Maya series is planned for publication in 2018.

About the project:
The layout is designed to be printed and distributed through Amazon Createspace and Ingram Spark. This combination provides for worldwide print-on-demand printing.
* The interior work was done on Linux Mint and using Scribus 1.4.6
* The beautiful cover was done for us by by James T. Egan of Bookfly Design
* The book is designed for printing as a standard 5.5 by 8.5 inch book.
* Margins: Inside = .8750in, Outside=.6250in, Top =.6250in, Bottom =.7500in The larger bottom margin allows for the page numbering to be included in the margin space
* Fonts: Body text = Crimson Text 11.5pt with a fixed 14pt line spacing. Title Page = Sail.
* Two primary sets of master pages were used. Left and right with Chapter header graphic and Left and Right without graphic.
* Ingram required the interior file be submitted as a PDF/x-1a file which required a bit of fiddling to get working in Scribus 1.4.6. CreateSpace accepted the same PDF/x-1a file.

Challenges: Once the basic layout, fonts, and margins were decided on, the biggest job was dealing with widows and orphans, unseemly spacing, and minutia. The tools were all there in Scribus, but it is picky and time consuming work. When working with the full 300 page manuscript, Scribus was at times was very slow and at other times seemed to lock up. It seems that this was more a case of it pegging the CPU at 100% for an extended time that an actual fail. The workaround was to save often and wait for it to come back. The hyphenation, more than once, picked the wrong place to breakup words. For most of the document we left hyphenation off and used manual hyphenation where needed.

All in all, a great success.

* 1. 48 pages 135gr matsilk paper + Hardcover top
* 2. Printed with https://issuu.com/digidiomedia/docs/portfolio-digidio_7_21x21cm_final_r
* 3. 21 x 21 cm square booklet
* 4. Used applications: Scribus v1.5.2 - Blender 3d - GIMP v2.8.18 - Inkscape v0.91
* 5. Used 14 templates with 10 grids + 1 fonts style - Embedded internet links
* 6. High quality 300dpi + ICC ISO Coated v2 300% + image effect - Sharpen

Decorated proverbs via WhatsApp broadcast
Reporter: Martin Zaske

Date: February, 2016 (our proverbs where launched in December 2015)

Scribus Version: about 1.4.5 under Ubuntu

We are a project for a minority language in West Africa with rather dynamic development.

Our latest idea is very successful with the readers: We are sending out weekly decorated proverbs via WhatsApp-broadcast. WhatsApp cannot yet handle certain characters in our alphabet. Or rather: There are several quality fonts (for example Google Noto fonts) available for Android etc, but WhatsApp-app is using something different and the users have no choice of changing the app-fonts.

So we are turning our problem into a virtue (wir machen aus der Not eine Tugend) and we ship our proverbs as jpeg-files (like photos). So all decorating and all characters are showing up on all phones as intended. Those proverbs are very humble: One sentence, one illustration; 400 x 400 pixels, low file-size. We tried broadcasting nice png-files, but WhatsApp then squished them into even worse jpeg-files, so we rather generate our own, with more control over the quality.

Why do we love Scribus for this job:
* Scribus can fully handle Unicode, i.e. can handle our language.
* In Scribus we have very powerful tools to shape our text exactly like we need it (colours, line-spacing, kerning etc.) which is nice to have, when the entire focus is on a single sentence.
* We can even use Scribus to convert our text into outlines...
* ... so we can chose nice decorative fonts (even if they do not carry all our characters) if we take the time to use the inbuilt Scribus vector-editor to tweak existing characters. For example we can quickly hack a capital D to create a barred capital Ɖ. Or we can flip the vowel e upside down to create the vowel "schwa": ǝ.
* We can easily make nice coloured backgrounds, with gradients or whatever.
* We can import vector-illustrations and make them do exactly what we want. Since we want our proverbs to be completely free (and quickly done) we are using openclipart.org. So our subscribers can forward our stuff however they like. If one ever goes viral, no problem.
* Once we are done, we keep the crisp vector-based master-Scribus-file for later "one never knows".
* And we can directly export our jpeg-files from Scribus with precise control of resolution, size, quality etc.
* (Actually we are using one more tool (Mapivi) after export to integrate our information about licensing or freedom for use...)
* Scribus is powerful, but not necessarily easily handled. But we are training young local people to produce those proverbs on a regular Scribus installation under Ubuntu, and we enjoy having two full HD screens for keeping all tools off to the side.

* We also love Scribus, because it is free. We have only published 11 proverbs so far; one per week. But already we are hearing several requests from neighbouring minority languages, who want to produce similar things for distribution. Now we can easily share our experience and also tell the friends where to get all the tools for free (Scribus, Inkscape, Gimp, Mapivi, Audacity (Yes, we have started to send an audio-version together with the decorated proverb, which helps users who are only starting to read their own language.))

* For the purpose of helping other languages, we will soon start producing our proverbs in an additional French version. So the Scribus layers are another very useful feature for us, for efficiently creating versions.
Examples
there should be a new one each week (the file-size is small on purpose, as our readers are receiving the proverbs on small screens and as internet-data is still expensive locally):

Update January 2017:
Since our proverbs turned out a real success, we now have more than 300 subscribers on WhatsApp, we created a dedicated website in December 2016 to collect all proverbs (decorated or not decorated) and added more stuff like audio-recordings and multiple translations. So at last you can read our proverbs in English:
