I thought I would add here a bit about Mr. Tufte's books. The first one, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, is largely devoted to what one might consider scientific data of various types, along the way discussing things like the effect of lines on visual perception.

Envisioning Information is a bit more broadly directed toward diagrams, maps, informational displays, not always so much data-oriented.

His third book, Visual Explanations (1997), which I did not reference on the main page, is perhaps even further afield, and I have to say, of lower interest for me, some of the examples being less than ideal by my assessment.
