- Any bug reports with free fonts or issues with Scribus using free fonts will be looked at very skeptically. There are extensive warnings and notes why this can be an issue in the main docs about using free fonts because of quality/correctness issues. --Mrdocs 22:05, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

- Gentium Fonts - recently re-released under new free license (Newsforge coverage)
- Bitstream Vera family - The Vera font family donated to the Gnome Foundation by Bitstream
- cwTeX TrueType 1.0 - Five sets of Traditional Chinese true type licensed under GPL, used in cwTeX document publishing system.
- LinuxLibertine a new font under the GPL, created to replace Times/Times New Roman (TrueType). According to the developers, regulars and italics already meet professional standards, other font faces (bold, small caps, text figures, sans serif) will follow.

- Like it or not, MS corefonts, like Times New Roman, can't be ignored, simply because of they are widely used.
- IPA and IPA Mona Japanese font
- Recently bundled with Ubuntu-ja Hoary and Breezy distribution (the packages are ipafont_1ubuntu1ja2 and ipamonafont_1.0.3-0ubuntu1ja1)
